The Full Story
From selling instruments out the trunk of his car, to the forefront of guitar innovation, George Gruhn's journey has been truly remarkable. What started as a passion for vintage guitars in the1960s has led to the creation of the Versitar, an innovative instrument that challenges traditional acoustic and electric guitar design norms.
In January 1970, George founded GTR in downtown Nashville, which later became Gruhn Guitars in 1976—a world-renowned destination for vintage guitar enthusiasts and collectors. His expertise extended beyond buying and selling; George became a trusted consultant for major guitar manufacturers, shaping the future of guitar craftsmanship.
George's ambitions extended beyond replicating classic designs. Recognizing gaps in guitar tonality that traditional Martin, Fender, and Gibson guitars couldn't quite fill, he envisioned the Versitar—a versatile instrument tailored to the demands of modern musicians.
Unconventional design elements, aimed at maximizing sound efficiency, are at the heart of the Versitar's innovation. The offset sound hole coupled with a unique bracing pattern permits the top to vibrate in front of the bridge and well as behind resulting in improved volume and tone. The uniquely designed bolt-on neck, with the fretboard attached throughout the whole 22-frets, fewatures a truss rod that runs the full length of the board which allows for comprehensive adjustability. The increased top movement due to these design features result in exceptional resonance and sustain.
The subtle V-shaped neck profile offers familiarity and comfort to both acoustic and electric guitar players. Its cutaway body facilitates easy access to the highest frets, while the neck design ensures clarity and presence even on the highest notes.
Crafted with precision from premium tonewoods at our facility in Lebanon, Tennessee, the Versitar becomes an all-in-one tool for multi-skilled musicians seeking expanded tonal possibilities.
More than just another guitar, the Versitar embodies George Gruhn's relentless pursuit of sonic perfection. Musicians across genres have praised its ability to seamlessly transition from mellow acoustic melodies to resonant lead lines, maintaining clarity and depth throughout.
As the Versitar gains momentum, George Gruhn remains dedicated to refining its design and broadening its appeal. His journey from a zoology student with a passion for guitars, to a pioneer in guitar innovation, underscores the power of challenging conventions and daring to dream beyond existing boundaries.
In a world where tradition meets innovation, George Gruhn and the Versitar stand as a testament to persistence, creativity, and the pursuit of excellence in musical innovation.
